This is a story of a group of people that were forcefully migrated from their home country almost 200 years ago via indentured servitude imposed by the British and, even though they have maintained their own culture and identity, have been an overlooked part of colonial history. Here is my expression of reverence to give these people some love and appreciation of their ancestry and journey on earth.
Here at Portal to Ascension we explore a wide variety of topics that ultimately lead to a path of empowerment. Over the last 10 years any topic I have been intrigued by or wanted to go deeper in, I have created an event on. This has allowed me to learn from some of the most profound minds on the planet. If you know me personally then you know how much I love ancient history; which is why many of the Portal to Ascension events are on exploring humanity’s past. The journey of how we got here and how we ended up all over the planet is one of the greatest stories ever told and not told. While doing my research and watching videos on new discoveries that are unexplained in the world, I stumbled onto a video mapping the spread of 5 major religions all over the world since 4000 BC.
Before moving on you can watch the video here...
Right at the end of the video as I took a look at the entire map I saw a little sliver of red in the North part of South America. This stood out to me because the red was for Hinduism and I wondered how there can be an entire country marked Hindu in South America. I discovered that there are about 550,000 Hindus in South America but this country hosts 270,000 of them and the neighboring country has 150,000. The first country is Guyana located just south of Venezuela and the other country is called Suriname. The Hindu population of Guiana is currently just under 40% and the Guyanese Hindu population has been migrating to North America for decades. There are about 200,000 of them in the US. Furthermore, these mainly came from a part of North India known as the Hindu Belt in which my family and ancestry is from. My mind was blown.
My curiosity got the best of me and I created this article. I wondered: how can there be such a huge population and these Indian descendants be the largest population in a country in South America without it being common knowledge to other Indians? How did they get there and what does their society look like now? I had to find out more.
In 1833 the British Empire passed the Slavery Abolition Act and due to the need of labor to continue to construct their empire they began indentured servitude projects and contracts. This in many cases looked very similar to slavery. Out of the 1 Million Indians that were taken from their home land to over a dozen countries; many of them were tricked into leaving and in some cases even kidnapped and taken from their families. In 1838 over 249 Indians were brought to British Guiana, now known as Guyana. Many of them were abused by the ship’s crew and 5 of them died. In the 80 years following, over 500,000 Indians were brought to the Caribbean as indentured servants and 350,000 of those were taken to British Guiana. In the 1850’s Christian Missionaries began to attempt to convert the East Indians; however they did not have much success in doing so. At this time the Indian Brahmans began administering spiritual rites to all Hindus regardless of caste. This led down to the fall of the caste system in Guyana, creating a more unified population that through solidarity kept their population and culture alive for almost 200 years.
The majority of the indentured laborers became farmers and entrepreneurs in Guyana and in the 1960’s some of them began migrating the North America. The Hindu religion is still practiced widely, but over the past two centuries has morphed into its own distinct expression; due to the break down of the caste system and the arrival of spiritual teachers such as Arya Samaj in 1910. This movement preached monotheism and an aversion towards idol worshiping. In many ways the religion became more inclusive and mirrored aspects of the Vedic age. For almost 100 years the Indians of Guyanese received some sort of persecution as well as relentless attempts from Christians to convert them. It was not until the 1930’s when conversions began to slow down and the discrimination diminished.
The story of humanity and our travels to the far reaches of the planet is inspiring, adventurous and full of wonder. As we begin to navigate through the cosmos and find other worlds; we pay homage to our collective journey and experiences on this beautiful planet. This is dedicated to the mass migration of souls across Earth to pioneer new frontiers, and to the struggles and hardships our ancestors endured to forge a future and reality for all of us.
