The FDA has recently announced that Psilocybin Magic Mushrooms has been given the breakthrough therapy designation… But what exactly does that mean? In order to find this out, we need to see what got us to this point.
Magic Mushrooms have been used for 1000's of years to effect the human consciousness. There is evidence in the Hindu text that mushrooms would grow wild in cow dung; as well as, other religious text such as Christianity speak of a substance called Manna. Many people have drawn the conclusion that Manna was psychedelic mushrooms. Modern awareness of human evolution has also implied that primitive humans did not evolve from plant life, but actually from fungi. There is a connection to mushrooms that seems to have been integrated into the entire existence of humanity and Earth. Some evolutionary scientists suggest that the moment we shifted from a primitive animalistic nature to a sentient one was due to our ancestors ingesting psychedelic mushrooms.
But how does this connect to modern times and the FDA?
Over the past few years clinical trials with mushrooms have been taking place in the United States. Other psychedelics such as MDMA and LSD have also been tested in lab / clinical settings. Many of these studies were done independently of the government and were crowdfunded by the public. The results of these studies were groundbreaking showing results and benefits that could not be denied. Patients with PTSD, depression, anxiety and other illnesses were beginning to improve. Magic Mushrooms passed the first stage of clinical trials with such great results that it was given the ‘Breakthrough Therapy Designation’. This does not mean that it is a breakthrough therapy in the eyes of the FDA. This only means that they are able to fast track the 2nd round of clinical trials due to the possibility that it could be a breakthrough therapy. In instances such as this, medication, dosage and how to distribute was already being considered during phase 1 of clinical trials. The FDA will reduce the review process to 6 months and will conduct a post marketing survey to ensure that the shifts and benefits are permanent without side effects that may harm the individual. The designation was specifically given for the changes that were seen in depression with the introduction of Psilocybin. The ailment is called Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). With over 17 million people in the US with this disorder and clear benefits from a single dose; many are hopeful for a future in which we can assist with depression without harmful pharmaceuticals.
How does Magic Mushrooms help heal depression?
The psychoactive component in mushrooms is called Psilocybin. Due to the evidence that we may have physically evolved from fungi and that mushrooms have played a key role in our evolution of our consciousness as a species on the planet; it may make sense to many people why it can benefit us as a collective. Psilocybin seems to have a reset protocol within it where it detoxes the body of unwanted toxins and increases brain activity. Over years of life our neural pathways are formed due to our behavior and actions. These become our habits and sometimes our limitations. When ingesting specific psychedelics (in this case Mushrooms) we can see that our synaptic connections between the neurons are re-wired and new connections are formed. Magic mushrooms affect the brain's prefrontal cortex, part of the brain that regulates abstract thinking, thought analysis, and plays a key role in mood and perception. They can also make you hallucinate. The use of Mushrooms have allowed individuals to break free of past limiting beliefs and habits and create new ones.
What does this mean for humanity’s future?
Once the Breakthrough Designation and clinical studies on Mushrooms are complete, we will see how the implementation of this occurs in the world. Denver, Colorado has decriminalized mushrooms and Oakland has decriminalized mushrooms and all other naturally occurring psychedelics including Ayahuasca & Peyote. There are about 100 other cities in the US that are considering decriminalizing mushrooms next year in 2020. This is unprecedented and is a huge shift from being a Schedule 1 substance to wide acceptance. Time will tell how this will affect the pharmaceutical industry and if there will be a push back from those with agendas that do not benefit all of humanity. We at Portal to Ascension are hopeful. I did not think I would see this in my life time…. It may start with curing depressive states but the use of various psychedelics and their specific benefits can change the world; which is why companies such as Dr. Bronner’s has donated $150,000 in Portland, Oregon towards the ballot initiative to legalize Magic Mushrooms there. We are in exciting times indeed and I am honored to be walking this path of awakening with all of you. Portal to Ascension will be creating and launching our Entheogenic Plant Awareness Conference some time next year that will take place in Oakland; alongside our other consciousness raising events we are also dedicated to eliminating the stigma behind these plants and fungi that the Earth has given us so that we can heal and achieve a greater perspective of awareness and harmony. Stay tuned and check out our Upcoming Live Events and Upcoming Webinars to see when the conference is launched. You can sign up for our email list to receive updates on all our events.
The Microdosing Revolution
Microdosing is when an individual takes small amounts of a substance in order to achieve a beneficial outcome without having to take a full dose. Many would say that a full dose of mushrooms is about 3 grams to 3.5 grams; whereas, a microdose would be approximately .01 grams. Most people who take this amount would not feel distinct effects such as hallucinations or in depth reflection (even though those who are extra sensitive may); however, they will still be able to receive benefits from microdosing such as rewiring and the creation of new synaptic connections in the brain and an eventual dissolving of depression and anxiety. There are more benefits to microdosing; however, since these benefits are not outlined by the FDA yet we are not going to speculate on them in this article. This article is designed to provide provable facts that are now surfacing in the United States. Business and tech professionals in Silicon Valley have been known to take microdoses in order to aid productivity and overall intellect. A study was conducted in the Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic where participants were given microdoses of mushrooms and to summarize the results the Psychedelic Society of the Netherlands stated, “Our results suggest that consuming a microdose of truffles allowed participants to create more out-of-the-box alternative solutions to a problem”. As microdosing and over all psychedelic use is becoming a part of our daily society many more may begin taking small amounts to address their mental and physical concerns with naturally occurring plants or fungi.
