Healing the Father Wound – A Personal Reflection by Neil Gaur

Healing the Father Wound

A Personal Reflection by Neil Gaur

Today is my dad’s birthday and I just got off the phone with him not even 15 minutes ago; and when we were almost done with the call, I said:

“Happy Birthday Dad. Thank you for everything and thank you for being such a good Dad. I love you.”

The first concise message of the type with full conviction I have ever said to my father in 43 years of life. In the past, the lack of receiving love and emotional support in the way I needed it as a child never gave me the tools to have that connection with him.

He spent the first few moments explaining how he couldn’t really move today because the Parkinson’s had flared up and he felt very stiff. There was a time not too far in the past when I couldn’t hear that from my dad without being emotionally dysregulated by it and not knowing how to process his pain and taking on the pain myself as if I was the one who was sitting there barely mobile.

There was a time when I couldn’t ever say I love you to my parents because they never said it to me. However, they loved me… they truly did and do.

It’s interesting when you can get to a point of life when you realize all the hardships, arguments, anger and an occasional smacking was because they had so many expectations and aspirations for what their son could be; and the thought of that not coming into fruition scared them to the point that they had to take it out on me.

This morning I woke up in gratitude for life, asking the universe to allow me to be a beacon of divine love in the work I do and through Portal to Ascension – and the next thought was to write an article on Healing the Father Wound. This is before I called my dad and I thought it had nothing to do with the fact that it was his birthday. Even though, looking at it now I can see it is all connected.

We are all a product of our experiences, past lives and energies beyond this realm that we are unconscious of. At what age does compassion for the pain someone experienced as a child that led them to who they became, end? As a child I adopted belief systems about myself that my parents imposed on me due to their fear and hopes.

The mother wound will be another email for another time… but today is about the father. Whether it’s the archetypal cosmic father, the pseudo father in governmental structures that continuously abandons its ‘children’ or your birth father.

Why It Manifests

Our parents are our Gods. They tell us what we can and cannot do, they create a dogma and doctrine for how we live out our lives, the way we communicate with them reflects on how we communicate with the world, they inspire us to feel certain ways about ourselves and they (usually) provide a stream of unconditional love towards us.

As I create conscious gatherings, have conversations with many people and reflect on my own upbringing, I have come to realize that many people in this world are emotionally stunted at prepubescent ages, including myself in some ways. When I investigate the world and see people of all ages, many times I see the child within them – including those that are committing atrocities in the world.

Many of us carry parts of ourselves that were hurt, unseen, or unloved. While this is not everyone’s experience, trauma can sometimes interrupt our emotional development, leaving aspects of us frozen at the age when the pain occurred.

What Is the Father Wound

A father wound is the emotional imprint left when a person’s relationship with their father, or father-like figure, lacked safety, consistency, love, protection, approval, or healthy guidance.

It does not always mean the father was “bad.” It can come from absence, emotional distance, criticism, addiction, anger, neglect, divorce, abandonment, control, or simply a father who was present physically but not emotionally available.

It can manifest as:

In relationships:

Fear of abandonment, choosing unavailable partners, craving approval, difficulty trusting men or authority figures, pushing people away before they can hurt you.

For much of my life I needed the approval of other men, beyond my father, to feel a belonging.

In self-worth:

Feeling like you must prove yourself, never feeling “good enough,” being overly hard on yourself, chasing success to feel validated.

I continue to struggle with this… in many ways Portal to Ascension’s success was connected to my consistent drive to prove myself to a father who no longer needed me to do so. Not every wound results in detriment; however, when it is left unhealed it can lead to an entire life consistently trying to prove yourself, when there is no one to prove yourself to.

In emotions:

Anger, grief, numbness, resentment, sadness, anxiety, or a deep ache around feeling unseen or unsupported.

In identity and confidence:

Difficulty feeling secure in yourself, trouble making decisions, fear of being judged, or not feeling fully backed by life.

In masculine/feminine balance:

Struggling with healthy boundaries, discipline, direction, structure, protection, or feeling safe to receive love and support.

I did not know how to end conversations. I had no boundaries. Other people owned my energy and could dictate conversations, activities and situations. I felt so unsafe most of my life.

A father wound often sounds inside like:

“Am I enough?”
“Will people leave?”
“Do I matter?”
“Can I trust support?”
“Why wasn’t I chosen, protected, or understood?”

“Will people leave?” – Being divorced for 5 years and not being in another relationship, this often has gotten in the way of me allowing someone in enough to be able to have a new relationship. I am happy to say I have made leaps and bounds in this just in the last year.

Whether it was a father who left when you were young, one who only appeared a few times throughout your life, or one who was physically present but emotionally unavailable, all of these experiences can leave a father wound.

In my case, my father was present. He was there. But he did not have the tools to offer emotional support, guidance, or the kind of modeling I needed to understand what it meant to become a man. So even though he was physically in my life, I carried a deep feeling of abandonment for most of my life.

I was 39 years old when I first began to feel that my father was no longer abandoning me. And I was 42 when I finally reached a place where I no longer needed his approval to feel worthy of being alive.

The Lack of Rite of Passage / Initiation

The father wound obviously manifests for both women and men. For a moment I want to speak to the men and the women who want to know how to support men in being the best version of themselves.

How many of you men out there, were ever taught how to be a man? What does that even look like? What is a true man of integrity anyway? Without the guidance from the masculine energy, it is hard to even come up with an answer for these questions.

In the ancient days tribes and civilizations had a rite of passage or an initiation for the son from childhood to adulthood… Today, this rite of passage has largely been replaced by pseudo-initiations. What was once guided within the home, family or tribe has been pushed out into the world, where young boys are left to search for manhood through culture, peers, media, survival, status, and distorted examples of masculinity.

Pornography is one of the largest pseudo-initiations. Other pseudo-initiations that can give the illusion that a boy is becoming a man, while potentially creating deeper distortions later in life: gang culture, fraternity hazing, substance abuse, distorted machismo, worship of status and money, military or warrior identity without emotional integration and empathy, and the constant pursuit of validation through social media.

A true initiation does not simply say,
“You are powerful now. You are a man.”

“You are responsible now. Your strength belongs in service to life.”

As men, we are here to protect, honor, and become stewards of the Divine Mother and the Divine Child… whether that is expressed through our relationships, our families, the children of this world, or the Earth herself.

So, the deeper question becomes: what will it take for us, collectively, to hold ourselves to an elevated standard of consciousness? What will it take for us to live from peace, truth, emotional maturity, and responsibility rather than from the distortions that create war, fear, anxiety, separation, and harm?

For some, this may feel like a distant dream, something humanity may never fully embody on Earth. But I feel it is the only true solution. And as the chaos continues to rise, and as the trauma that has been buried for generations comes forward to be seen, healed, and held by all of us as the wounded child that was neglected and needs our love to be reconciled with the light, perhaps the only direction left is upward.

Thank you for reading this today. It was definitely very emotional writing this and writing this in itself was a healing process and deep reflection for me of who I am and the man I am continuously becoming.

If you would like me to write another article on the rite of passage, becoming your own inner father, and learning how to parent yourself in adulthood in a way that brings healing, perspective, and harmony to the father wound, please reply to this email and let me know.

Sending lots of love,
