Zantac, which has become the best selling drug in history, has now been found to contain ingredients that cause cancer. This over the counter drug is called Ranitidine and has gone by many other names, but the most common name is Zantac. It is a medication which decreases stomach acid production. Zantac was created in 1976 and came into commercial use in 1981. It is commonly used in treatment of peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.

Glaxosmithkline are the creators of Zantac and Sanofi sold the product. It has now been recalled due to evidence suggesting it may have caused cancer in many Zantac users. “Glaxo’s Zantac began its dominance of the acid/peptic marketplace with a launch strategy, taking advantage of the established Roche sales force to rapidly promote the product. Educational symposia for physicians were instrumental in disseminating both disease and product information to primary care physicians and specialists. This technique not only pleased physicians (more referrals), but also increased public awareness of gastrointestinal disease, further expanding the patient market. Several novel marketing strategies contributed to Zantac’s success, including the public-service announcements, celebrity media tours, and consumer-awareness bulletins, which brought the drug to the lay public and encouraged individuals to seek advice from their physicians.”

In September of 2019 the FDA released tests that showed low levels of NDMA, N-nitrosodimethylamine, in Zantac. A week later the drug was recalled by Novartis/Sandoz and Apotex, but continued being distributed by other companies and drug stores.

What is NDMA and what harm can it cause?

NDMA is an environmental contaminant that is found in water and foods, including dairy products, vegetables, and grilled meats. Its classification as a probable carcinogen is based on studies in animals; studies in humans are very limited.

Some researchers have stated that the NDMA levels are too low to create cancer; however a 2016 study at Stanford University gave 10 healthy volunteers 150 milligrams of Zantac and found that subsequent NDMA levels in their urine exceeded 47,000 nanograms. The consensus is that most of the NDMA would have bee metabolized before reaching the urine; therefore, the actual amount in the body could have been much higher. A study in 2004 of people with peptic ulcers found that those who were taking either Zantac or another antacid, Tagamet (cimetidine), had a heightened risk of bladder cancer.

This is another case of negligence in regards to Big Pharma companies in which they create medication, make billions and then paying a small fraction of their profits in lawsuits and penalities. Even though many may be compensated, what really is the price on your health and longevity. Hopefully someday soon we will not even have these situations arise as we begin to operate consciously and prescribe medications such as natural cures and herbs that provide excellent results without any of the side effects.
