Vastu was the system of architectural design and town planning in ancient India. Knowledge of the Vastu principles can contribute to answering questions about the identity of the inhabitants of the Indus Valley Civilization in the northwest part of the Indian subcontinent. One idea is that all of the original inhabitants were of Dravidian origin who were replaced by incoming Indo Europeans who brought along with them the Sanskrit language and Vedic culture. Another idea is that people who used the Sanskrit language and practiced Vedic culture were also inhabitants of the Indus Valley Civilization. One problem in resolving this question is the script used at the time of the Indus Valley civilization has not been deciphered in a way that all parties accept. So Vastu principles offer another resource. In 2008 I visited the Lothal site in India’s Gujarat state, which is recognized as a major Indus Valley Civilization site. I studied the shape and orientation of the town’s boundaries, streets, and buildings, noting internal divisions of the town according to function (administrative, residence, workshops, worship). I concluded this favors a Vedic identity for most of the population of the Indus Valley Civilization. This leads to the hypothesis that Vedic culture has a very long history in India and it is not of fairly recent import. I will also outline some of Vastu’s connections with the spiritual aspects of Vedic culture.
